Read Luke 3:7-18. What do you notice? What thoughts or questions come to mind?

 

What does John have in mind when he speaks of the “coming wrath” (v. 7. See 1 Thess. 1:10; Hebrews 10:27; Amos 5:18; Zeph. 1:15). Do you ever think about the approach of God’s judgment?

 

What is repentance? Does fruit automatically come from repentance (v. 8)? Explain your answer.

 

Why might John’s hearers say, “We have Abraham as our father”? Can you think of similar things people might say today?

 

Rewrite verse 9 in your own words. Would the people you know be likely to respond to this message?

 

What should we make of John’s answer to the crowd’s question (verses 10-11)? In what sense would sharing food or clothing be the fruit of repentance?
