Read Luke 3:1-6. What thoughts or questions come to mind?

 

Luke 3:4-6 is a quote from Isaiah 40. Read Isaiah 40:1-11. How did Luke understand Isaiah’s message in the light of recent occurrences?

 

Can you think of any reasons why Luke might include verses 1-2a? What was he trying to accomplish by listing all these names?

 

The word of God came to John in the desert rather than to Annas or Caiaphas in the palace of the high priest. What might this have to say to us?

 

What were the circumstances surrounding John’s birth? See Luke 1:5-25, 57-80.

 

Why did John baptize people? (Jewish people were not baptized.)

 

What is repentance? Is it important? Explain your answer.

 

Shayne pointed out that true repentance looks forward, not just backward. Put in your own words what that might mean. Why is it important?
