Go Deep
(John 12:12-19)
Read John 12:12-19. In the past, have you understood that the people who shouted praises to Jesus on Sunday were the same ones who called for his crucifixion on Friday? What do you think now?
How do you think the apostles must have felt during the triumphal entry? (See Mark 10:35-37; Luke 9:46; Luke 22;24.)
Do you believe this celebration was spontaneous or was it in some manner planned? Why do you answer the way you do?
Read Mark 11:1-7. How would you have felt about the assignment to secure the donkey had you been one of the disciples?
Why did Jesus choose a donkey rather than a horse or a chariot? What does this say about the kind of kingdom he rules?
Read verse John 12:16. Are you surprised that the disciples did not think of Zechariah 9:9 when Jesus sent them for the donkey?
What does John mean (he was one of the disciples sent to secure the donkey) that they did not realize “that they had done these things to him?” What are “these things” they had done to him?
Do you think the crowds in verse 12 are comprised of the same people that make up the crowd in verse 17?
How do you think the people in the city who “went out to meet him” (verse 18) heard that Jesus was coming? Do you think they would have gone out to meet him if they hadn’t heard about what had happened to Lazarus?
Lazarus plays a large role in the events on Palm Sunday. Can you state what his role was? Do you think that our role today is anything like Lazarus’s role then? Explain.
Go back to verse 9. People who came to Jesus also wanted to see Lazarus. What about a believer’s life today might arouse people’s interest in Jesus?
